Sri Lankan soldierpatrol a section of the national A-9 highway 15 November 2006 in the northern town of Jaffna. The A-9 highway has been closed at the entrance to the Jaffna peninsula following heavy fighting between troops and Tamil Tiger rebels since mid-August. Despite a February 2002 truce, fighting has escalated in Sri Lanka in the past year, with more than 3,300 people killed in violent clashes, according to official figures.
