கனேடிய கடற்பரப்பில் கைதுசெய்யப்பட்ட இலங்கை அகதிகளைத் தொடர்ந்தும் சிறையில் வைக்குமாறு அந்நாட்டு குடிவரவு ஆராய்வுசபை உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது. கடந்த வெள்ளிக்கிழமை கைது செய்யப்பட்ட குறித்த அகதிகளிடம் கனேடியப் பிரதிநிதிகள் விசாரணைசெய்து வருகின்றனர். இந்நிலையில் 76பேரையும் விசாரிப்பதற்கு அமைச்சின் பிரதிநிதிகளுக்கு போதிய காலஅவகாசம் போதாமையாலேயே தடுப்புக்காவல் உத்தரவு பிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டது என கனேடிய குடிவரவு ஆராய்வுசபையின் உறுப்பினர் லீன்கிச் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். இவர்களுக்கான விசாரணைகள் முடிவடைந்தவுடன் குறித்த 76பேரும் சமூகத்தில் இணைத்துக் கொள்ளப்படுவர் எனத் தெரிவித்துள்ள அவர், இந்த அகதிகள் தொடர்பான விவரங்கள் பத்திரிகையில் வெளியிட தடைவிதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது என்றும் கூறியுள்ளார். அகதிகள் மற்றும் அவர்களின் குடும்பங்கள் தொடர்பான விவரங்களை வெளியிடும் பட்சத்தில் அவர்கள் வௌ;வேறு சிக்கல்களை எதிர்கொள்வர். இதனாலேயே அவர்கள் தொடர்பான செய்திகளை பிரசுரிக்கத் தடையுத்தரவு பிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதேவேளை அவர்கள் தொடர்பான செய்திகளை வெளியிடுவது அவர்களின் குடும்பத்தினருக்கும் அவர்களுக்கும் பாரிய நெருக்கடிகளை கொடுக்கும் என்று அவர்கள் சார்பாக ஆஜரான வழக்கறிஞர் லெனின் ஸ்மித் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். குறித்த 76பேரில் 15பேருக்கான விசாரணை நிறைவடைந்த நிலையில் இன்று ஏனையவர்களுக்கு விசாரணை தொடரும் என தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

*_We Must Protect the Rights of Refugees_*
OTTAWA, October 21, 2009 – Alexandra Mendès, Member of Parliament for Brossard – La Prairie, is concerned about the precedent being set by federal officials dealing with the recent arrival of 76 men taken into custody on a boat off Vancouver Island over the weekend.
“It was very disturbing to hear media reports of the RCMP boasting that they are working with the Sri Lankan authorities on establishing the identity of the Sri Lankans who arrived by boat and by all accounts want to claim refugee status” said Mrs. Mendès. “This is a violation of one of the most basic principles of refugee protection – you don’t share claimant information with the government from which they fled.”
Under the UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, Canada has legal obligations towards people in Canada who claim our protection. 2009 is the 40th anniversary of Canada’s signature of this fundamental instrument of refugee protection.
“It appears we are violating the rules that we helped develop. We must stand up for refuges and stop labelling all claimants as being “fake” added Mrs. Mendes. “There is a process for dealing with refugee claimants that must be adhered to in order to protect these people until a judgment is passed.”
